Senior Systems Technician

The Dayton Metro Library is hiring a full-time Senior Systems Technician to work in the IT Department at the Library’s Operations Center, which is located one block south of the Main Library in downtown Dayton.  The successful candidate will set up user accounts for new employees and ensure that computers/equipment are replaced in such a way that interruptions to service are minimized.  The ideal candidate will collaborate with the rest of the IT team to troubleshoot issues and respond to calls from staff in a customer-focused manner. Essential Job Duties

  • Maintains physical inventory of stocked PCs, monitors, printers, networking equipment, and spare parts. Maintains inventory database of deployed and shelf stocked items.
  • Detects errors or equipment failure as indicated from user help desk calls or alerts from automated monitoring systems. Resolves issues immediately when possible. Tracks issues requiring more time and escalates to specialists, third party support, or Systems Manager as required.
  • Resolves problems and responds to questions from staff concerning computer hardware and software. Troubleshoots computer hardware and software problems. Tracks issues requiring more time and escalates to specialists, third party support, or Systems Manager as required.
  • Provisions and maintains user accounts for the integrated library system, Windows and directory services, email, phone system, and voice mail.
  • Clones and prepares PCs, phones, printers, scanners, and other hardware for new deployment or upgrades.
  • Prepares obsolete equipment for electronics disposal. Coordinates pickups with recyclers.
  • Assists with basic systems administration tasks as required. 
  • Performs preventive maintenance as needed.

Creates documentation and contributes to IT knowledgebase documentation. Creates and updates technology user guides for library staff as needed.

Trains Systems Technicians to accomplish assigned tasks following established procedures. 

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license, acceptable motor vehicle record, and continuous insurability required.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret instruction manuals and policy and procedure manuals. -Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from end users. Ability to apply active listening skills.
  • Ability to train and communicate daily work instructions to Systems Technicians.
  • Thorough knowledge of computer operations and systems hardware/software.
  • Knowledge of available and emerging technologies and their application to library services.
  • Occasional mandatory overtime and on-call support required.

Physical Requirements: Ability to infrequently lift monitors and printers weighing up to 40 pounds. Ability to periodically climb and drive. Ability to occasionally use rolling carts and dollies. Ability to occasionally carry, hold, lift, reach, stoop and turn. Ability to frequently grasp, sit, stand, walk, and use keyboard. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision for driving. Ability to speak and hear required.

Compensation and Benefits: Starting hourly rate for this position is $22.06. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance along with paid time off and OPERS retirement.
